OC-3

An optical fiber that transmits data between two network devices. An OC-3 line runs at three times the base rate (3 x 51.84 Mbps).

 

ODBC Support

Object Database Connectivity (ODBC) support allows ODBC compliant applications to connect to an ODBC database and extract data without requiring that the user have programming skills. For example, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and mySQL are ODBC compliant applications. Using ODBC and mySQL a user can import data directly into an Excel spreadsheet once mySQL ODBC drivers have been installed on the user"s computer.

 

Off-Line Transaction Processing

Capture of order and credit card information for later authorization and transaction processing through a traditional card swipe terminal or through a computer.

 

OLE

Acronym for Object Linking and Embedding where program or application development is performed through the use of objects or the creation of objects that perform specific computer function.

 

Online

When you have an active connection to the Internet.

 

Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)

A standard for accessing different database systems. There are interfaces for Visual Basic, Visual C++, SQL and the ODBC driver pack contains drivers for the Access, Paradox, dBase, Text, Excel and Btrieve databases.

 

Opinion Poll

An organized research tool used to gather information on a topic or to gauge the position of the consumer in the marketplace. In politics used to assess the performance of politicians in meeting the needs of the people, for example Bill Clinton's performance polls in his ability to effectively manage the Government was below 38% in 1994 just prior to the Information Superhighway promotion and over 55% after it took off and spurred an economic turn around based on the commercial use of the Internet.

 

Opt-in Email

Where a person voluntarily provides their email address for the intent of receiving specified email.

 

Order Confirmation

An email message notifying a customer that an order has been received and will be processed.

 

Order Management System

A system that accepts orders and initiates a process that results in the outbound shipment of a finished good.
